If you have recently had a new home built, the property around it is probably just bare ground. The ground may even be uneven, with piles of dirt in some areas and holes or low areas in others. While you could hire a company to come and flatten out the land, plant trees, or build a wall or fish pond, it is also possible to rent the heavy equipment you need and do the work yourself. Here is some of the things you will need to get started.
Truck and Trailer
Regardless of what type of work you will be doing, you are going to need a truck for picking up the materials or filling with dirt. If there will be a lot of work and a lot of materials, you should also get a utility trailer to help move things around. In addition to picking stuff up from the store, you will probably be moving things around the property as well. A truck and trailer will make things much easier than a wheelbarrow.
Backhoe and Loader
If you need to dig a hole or some trenches, you are going to want a backhoe. This will be much better than using a shovel. You will be able to move a lot of dirt at once without straining your back or getting blisters. If you will be moving the dirt around, get a machine that has a backhoe on one end and a loading bucket on the other.
In addition to being able to excavate and move dirt around, you can use the front bucket for grading the area. This is ideal for when you need to level the ground as the blade is straight for removing high levels and the bucket can make deposits to lower areas.
If there are some trees you want to be removed, or old, dead bushes, you will need a mulcher. This will grind up the branches and such and also provide you with a nice mulch you can use in the garden beds you plant.
Landscaping your own yard can be a lot of fun. It will also be a lot of work. However, when you have the right equipment, the job gets done much easier and faster. Depending on the size of the property, you could get everything done in a single weekend. This will allow you to do the planting the next weekend and have a yard you love to look at very quickly.
