Set Yourself Apart When Applying For Oilfield Trucking Jobs

Working as a driver for an oilfield trucking company can be a rewarding career. The competition to get a job as a truck driver on an oil field, however, can be fierce. Even after you obtain the necessary licensing to drive tractor trailers, bed trucks and tankers, there may still be other drivers who have more experience -- and, therefore, are more qualified -- than you. There are, however, ways to set yourself apart from other applicants. If you want to become a truck driver for an oilfield trucking company, here are two ways to distinguish yourself from other potential candidates.

Take a Mechanic Course on Heavy Machinery

The more you know about how heavy machinery operates, the more valuable you'll be to potential employers. If the equipment you're driving ever breaks down, you may be able to repair it without calling a mechanic to come out to your truck. Even if you can't repair the issue, you might be able to at least tell a mechanic what parts they'll need, which would save them a trip to get parts. In either of these cases, a little knowledge about heavy equipment could save a mechanic time -- and your employer money.

One of the easiest ways to learn about heavy machinery is to take a mechanic class at a local vocational school or community college. These classes are often affordable and only run for a few months long, and they'll give you some knowledge of heavy machinery.

Work as a Service Technician

When driving an oil field trucking company's equipment, you'll be entrusted with expensive company equipment. Trucks cost thousands of dollars, not to mention the value of the cargo you'll be transporting. Your employer will want to know that they can trust you with the company's tractor trailers.

You can show prospective employers that you're trustworthy by working for a time as a service technician. Service technicians often use company tools, and many drive company vehicles. Your time working as a service tech will show that you're trustworthy will small company assets, which will suggest that you can also be trusted with large and expensive assets.

If you're trying to get a job as a truck driver for an oilfield trucks in Alberta don't just focus on getting a license to drive tractor trailers. Also, consider taking a mechanic course and working as a service technician. Both of these endeavors could help set you apart from other drivers who are applying for the same jobs as you.
